The UK Government is committed to establishing by 2012 a strong, ecologically coherent and well managed network of MPAs that is well understood and supported by sea users

About Net Gain: The North Sea Marine Conservation Zones Project

The UK has signed up to international agreements that aim to establish an 'ecologically coherent network of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs)' by 2012. This means the network will be a collection of areas that work together to provide more benefits than an individual area could on its own. The UK MPA network will be made up of several designations, including new Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs)..In the inshore waters of England and the offshore waters of England, Wales and Northern Ireland the network will consist of MCZs, European Marine Sites, SSSIs and Ramsar Sites.

Net Gain has been established to work with stakeholders to identify and recommend MCZs in the English North Sea only.

Am I a Stakeholder?

If you have an interest in the marine environment then yes, you probably are! Stakeholders include anyone who will be affected by the creation of MCZs. We would love to hear from you as we welcome all stakeholders' knowledge and views.
